Tips for planning your Design System

How can you plan the roadmap for your Design System? What should you take into account to ensure its success?

Have you been assigned a project to create your organization's Design System and don't know where to start? Here are some ideas to help you plan that roadmap.

Planning your Design System

1. Evaluation Phase

  • Evaluate the current state of adoption of the Design System.
Do you already have something developed that some designers and developers are using? Who is using it? I recommend taking an inventory of the components in your products to determine which ones you should prioritize.
  • Identify stakeholders and gather feedback on the existing system.
  • Conduct user interviews and surveys to understand problem areas and needs. This is important; do some research within your organization. This will help you gain more clarity in adapting the roadmap.
  • Evaluate existing design assets and documentation.

2. Define Objectives and Goals.

Based on the evaluation findings, define clear objectives for the adoption phase.

  • Align the objectives with the broader business goals.
  • Establish measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress.

3. Communicate and Train.

  • Develop a communication plan to educate stakeholders about the benefits of the Design System.
  • Create training materials (face-to-face courses) and conduct workshops to integrate teams into the Design System.
  • It provides ongoing support and resources for users as they transition to the new system.

4. Iterative Implementation.

  • Prioritize features and components based on user feedback and impact.
  • Implement updates and improvements to the Design System iteratively.
  • Conduct regular usability testing and gather feedback for continuous refinement.
  • Ensure consistency across all platforms and applications using the new Design System.

5. Document and Create Processes.

  • Improve documentation to provide clear guidelines and instructions for use.
  • It establishes governance processes to manage updates and contributions to the Design System.
  • Define roles and responsibilities to maintain and evolve the system.

6. Integrate with the Development Workflow.

  • Integrate the Design System into your workflows and development tools.
  • It provides developers with the resources and support needed for implementation.
  • Automate processes whenever possible to streamline integration and updates.

7. Feedback and Evaluation.

  • Research, research. Gather feedback from stakeholders and users on the effectiveness of the Design System. Is it working? What's needed for adoption by other teams?
  • Evaluate the KPIs to measure the impact of the adoption phase.
  • Identify areas for improvement and plan future iterations of the Design System roadmap.

Also, don't forget to celebrate success 🎉 and plan for the future.
Recognize and celebrate the milestones achieved during the adoption phase.
You can also take some time to reflect on lessons learned and get ideas for future projects.

Remember to adapt this roadmap to the specific needs and context of your organization and project, and include delivery times and task assignments. Creating a Design System is a collaborative effort.
